Age-related changes in human posture control: motor coordination tests.
نویسندگان
چکیده
Postural responses to support surface displacements were measured in 214 normal human subjects ranging in age from 7 to 81 y. Motor tests measured leg muscle electromyographic (EMG) latencies, body sway, and the amplitude and timing of changes in center of pressure displacements in response to sudden forward and backward horizontal translations of the support surface upon which the subjects stood. There were small increases in both EMG latencies and the time to reach the peak amplitude of center of pressure responses with increasing age. The amplitude of center of pressure responses showed no change with age if the amplitude measures were normalized by a factor related to subject height. In general, postural responses to sudden translations showed minimal changes with age, and all age-related trends that were identified were small relative to the variability within the population.

A Change in the Central Control of Sensorimotor Coordination'
In characterizing the changes that occur in sensorimotor coordination after viewing the prism-displaced image of the hand, four types of explanation can be advanced: visual, proprioceptive, motor, and sensorimotor. Each one predicts different consequences on different tests of coordination: reaching for visual targets, orienting head to hand, orienting eye to hand, and repositioning the hand in...
متن کاملComparison of Postural Control and Functional Balance in Individuals People with Intellectual Disabilities with and Without Developmental Coordination Disorder
Introduction: Balance in individual with intellectual disability has a great importance due to the failure to perform motor tasks. The purpose of the present study was to compare postural control and balance function in two groups of individual with intellectually disabled with and without developmental coordination disorder. Methods: The present study was a cross-sectional and causal-comparat...
متن کاملAge-related changes in upper body adaptation to walking speed in human locomotion.
Assessments of changes in gait stability due to aging and disease are predominantly based on lower extremity kinematic and kinetic data. These gait changes are also often based on comparisons at preferred speed only. The purpose of this experiment was to: (1) examine age-related changes in range of motion and coordination of segments of the upper body during locomotion; and (2) investigate the ...
متن کاملAging causes a reorganization of cortical and spinal control of posture
Classical studies in animal preparations suggest a strong role for spinal control of posture. In humans it is now established that the cerebral cortex contributes to postural control of unperturbed and perturbed standing. The age-related degeneration and accompanying functional changes in the brain, reported so far mainly in conjunction with simple manual motor tasks, may also affect the mechan...
